Now, normally I would just brush this off as a normal teenager behavior. Any teenager would be mortified if her mother hung out with her friends. However, the subtext of this passage tells something else. It tells me that Clary thinks that her mother is too good to go out and listen to poetry. This wouldn’t bother me much, but I have read ahead and I already know that Jocelyn is Mary Sue Senior in this series (but we’ll talk to about that later) so it comes off as snobbish as hell.
I also want to take this time to talk about Eric, and why Clary is so negative about Eric. We get an answer to that later on, but I honestly think that an explanation on why Clary has such a bad reaction to Eric would have been perfect here instead of the info dump she gave us instead. You can’t just give us Clary reaction to Eric, without not telling us why. Without the explanation, this makes Clary look like a snobbish asshole. I have a sinking feeling that this is going to be a reoccurring problem throughout this series. *sigh*
