Now answer me honestly, after reading these snippets was there anyone who was really surprised that Raphael turned out to be a vampire? I can see that Cassandra Clare, tried to do some subtle foreshadowing, but like with everything else in this book she failed pretty hard at it. I’m going to break this fail down point by point. So grab a hard hat and hold your butts, because it’s going this one is going to be a doozy.
- The first clue was that Raphael was apparently able to sneak up on a battle-hardened Shadowhunter with little effort.
- Raphael is just patrolling his neighborhood by himself, in an area that he knows is full of super strong and fast vampires, that by the way can FREAKING FLY. However, he is just walking around their territory at night, completely unharmed.
- And if Clary didn’t pick up on the rest of what I previously mentioned, then she should have really been suspicious when she felt how cold Raphael’s hands were. I will remind you that this all takes place in August. His hands shouldn’t be that cold, especially if he was outside all that time.
Jace seems to pick up on these clues from the very beginning, but does our plucky clever heroine does? No! It just goes way over her head. And then a few pages later, Clare has the utter audacity to write this:
“You are both very clever,” Raphael said.
This yet another instance Clare using her characters as her mouthpieces so she can gush about how smart her self-insert is. When it’s already has been proven that Clary is in fact, dumber than a bag of rocks.
