I want to take this time to examine and discuss Valentine’s motivations. I already talked to you guys at long length about how stupid and ineffectual Valentine is as an antagonist. Now, I want to talk further about how idiotic his motivations are. So he’s a Shadowhunter who thinks all Downworlders should be murdered because they were originally derived from Demons. This makes no sense! If he hates Downworlders so much because of their demonic origins, then why the fuck is he using pure demons as his minions?
Are Valentine’s prejudices are just against demons as a whole as the passage is trying to infer, or is he just against mixing species? Valentine hating Downworlders because they were mixed breed, is disgusting but understandable. However, what I don’t understand is why Hodge is then saying that Valentine wanted to keep the world pure for human beings. Yet, the question I ask is why? I mean, why would Valentine have such a high esteem for the Mundanes? I am assuming when Hodge is referring humanity that he is talking about Mundanes, because it’s more than obvious that the Shadowhunters don’t even consider Mundanes and Shadowhunters the same species at this point. Almost explicitly said and implied from the very first chapter of this book that the Shadowhunters think that mundanes are the weaker species.
You would think that with Valentine having a huge superiority complex, he would to then want to dominate mundanes as well. And yet, Valentine wants to scourge the world of Downworlders to keep the world pure for mundanes? I want to also know why he killed all those Shadowhunters? I mean the more logical and smarter move would have been to kill the Downworlders, not your fellow Shadowhunters. All in all, Valentines motivations are nonsensical and this passage further shows why he makes such an ineffectual antagonist
