So before I get into the nitty gritty of this passage, I’m going to warn you straight off the bat that I have moved on from my mouth frothing rage into depression. Why? Because this was supposed to the climax of the ‘The Clary’s Mental Block’ subplot and it went out with a freaking whimper. I came to an epiphany that the of the book is just going to get even worse as time goes on. I swear to god WTFers, if it wasn’t for you guys, I would have just called it quits and just read some fanfiction instead. *sigh*
So let’s move on to this passage. I really wanted to see Jocelyn in a good light after reading these snippets. I really did, because as a parent myself, I can understand all too well being that desperate to protect your child. Jocelyn was raising a child by herself while on the run. My mom was a single parent and I know from personal experience that being a single parent is one of the hardest jobs in the world
However, I can’t stop from judging her for basically taking her two-year-old child to Magnus, who was a virtual stranger at the time, and allowing him to mind rape her own daughter over, and over, over again. She didn’t know if Magnus was trustworthy, she didn’t know that he wouldn’t destroy her child’s mind for shits and giggles, or even worse implant something horrible in her brain The mind is one of the most complicated organs in our bodies, and especially fucking with a developing child’s brain is a huge no-no.
Magnus even stated that, that the permanent erasing Clary’s memories could have permanent damage her brain, and who knows what other types of long-term effects of mind raping over and over can have.on a child.
What I really want to know is: Did Jocelyn ever planned on actually telling Clary the truth? What if Clary wanted to go to college out of state, or hell decided to leave New York City permanently? What then? From what I have seen of Magnus, he would not have been so gracious as to leave New York to help a Shadowhunter child of all people.
So essentially, Clary would have been still being thrust into this world, with no help, far away from the support of her mother, with no way to defend herself, because Jocelyn refused to teach her anything Not to mention, Clary would instantly have superpowers which could damage a mundane very easily.
Again, I can understand why Jocelyn would want anything to do with the Shadowworld. The Clave would use Clary and spit her out, but I still say Joceyln’s actions were not only incredibly short sighted on her part, but completely idiotic as well. I think Jocelyn should have given her a normal childhood, but also taught her essential things to survive the Shadowworld. And then when Clary was of age, Jocelyn should had let have the choice between living as a Mundane or living as a Shadowhunter.
