I ranted yesterday about how unnecessary this scene was. This passage really proves that I was absolutely right in my criticism. This part of the scene should have been cut because it really adds nothing to the overall plot and actually dissipates the growing tension of the subplot. This is supposed to be part of the climax of “Clary’s Mental Block” subplot, and Clare should be of the subplot stockpiling the dramatic tension and suspense. However, after re-reading this passage I realized a few things:
When exactly did Alec and Jace have time to slip some holy water into the gas tank of the bikes? In the beginning of this chapter we saw them both examine the bikes, and we didn’t at any time during that scene see Alec and Jace slip the holy water into the bikes. Yet, Alec just admits that both he and Jace were responsible for it. This feels similar to the illogical flyer of much illogic. We got no hints or clues that this bit was going on, and then suddenly Clare pulls this out of nowhere
Another thing I would like to mention was how stupid and inappropriate this practical joke was. They are to meet a Magnus Bane, a Downwinder that they never met before, so they had no idea how Magnus would react to this prank It could have very easily gone the other way around, with Magnus being pissed off that they tampered with one of his guests motorcycles, even after he graciously let them into his party. Especially, when they weren’t even invited in the first place. Magnus, could have been pissed, and just kicked them out without removing Clary’s mental block.
I also have to say, that this was really out of character on Alec’s part. Alec has always come across as more responsible, logical, and by the book type of person than either of his siblings. Yet, out of nowhere, Alec Lightwood is helping Jace with this practical joke? And then stupidly admits to it? This practical joke could have easily damaged Shadowhunters/Downworlders relations more than it already is. I personally just can’t see Alec doing that.
ETA 8/3/2016: Sorry guys, but I just realized that on the panels it says this passage was taken from Chapter 11, but it was actually taken from Chapter 12. It’s way too late to change because I’m currently working on Chapter 15. Fortunately, the next week’s panels are correctly labeled.
