For everyone out there who loved the first season of “Shadowhunters,” you better be prepared for a lot more of the story inspired by “The Mortal Instruments.”As Jason Lynch from Adweek points out while at the Freeform Upfronts (thanks to SpoilerTV for the heads-up), the upcoming second season will run for 20 episodes. This is a healthy bump up from the 13 episodes that the drama had in its first season, and it puts it more on par with “Pretty Little Liars” and many of the other extremely-successful shows airing on the network. As Lynch points out, the show was the subject of a lot of attention at the upfronts, and we are not even remotely surprised by this when you think about the landscape in which it was launched. This was really the first original series to come on the rebranded Freeform, and when you consider the DVR numbers, international popularity, and source material on which the show is based, it is pretty easy to figure out why in the world the network would want to keep it around for a long time moving forward.
You would think that I would be extra happy at getting an extra seven episodes next season. A huge part of me is. However, I just came straight from the teen wolf fandom, where the moment their seasons were extended beyond 12 episodes, they lost their freaking mind. I don’t think that Ed Decter is no where near as egoistical and stupid as Teen Wolf Showrunner, Jeff Davis. However, I am concerned that Freeform is essentially giving them enough rope to hang themselves. The reason I’m not completely jumping up and down in joy over this news is that from a watcher’s standpoint much prefer the tight and concise format of a 13 episode arc. Anyway, congratulations ‘Shadowhunters’ and may your next season be even more awesome than the first!
