After it was revealed that Cleophas was a member of the Circle in the last episode, I had no clue how the writers were going to take the next episode. And I was delighted, surprised, and then more than a little disappointed. However, before I start getting into any of that I want to like always to talk about the things I loved in this chapter.
Warning: I’m not the biggest fan of Clary Fray. I’m also not a huge fan of the Jace/Clary/Simon love triangle. There is also a bit of Sizzy bashing so stay away from this review in particular if you can’t handle someone talking shit about your OTP. Also, if you are new to my recaps I want to warn you guys from the jump that I despise Victor Aldertree, so if you love him you need to leave right now.
What I Loved About This Episode
To start, I want to discuss the Simon and Maia’s scenes. I was delighted that Simon was actually trying to move on from his unrequited feelings for Clary. So I was overjoyed that we got so more Simon and Maia’s onscreen interaction. Once again they were totally adorable and with their shy smiles and geeky pop culture references.
I also loved the Jace and Simon scenes as well, which due to Jace’s previous circumstances we have been missing this season so far. I just love how Jace and Simon banter with each other. Jace was back to his usual douchey arrogant self. Although, to me, it felt like Jace was regressing back to the person he used to be (more about that later).
I actually found it pretty funny how Jace took Simon under his wing in order to try to teach Simon how to approach women. Although admittedly, I rather have Simon and his awkward charm than Jace and his whole womanizing routine. After his fight with Maia, I hope that Simon will realize that he only needs to be himself.
Another thing I loved about this episode was the scenes between Magnus and Alec. They were way too short in my opinion and I know that it’s frustrating for me as a Magnus/Alec shipper to see them continuously interrupted by everyone. The most recent cockblocker is Jace (and his weird new need to be a manwhore all of a sudden) and The Clave. I just wanted to scream at everyone to just leave Magnus and Alec alone.
And speaking of Magnus, I really loved Magnus’s scenes with Isabelle. And how he basically confronted her about Yin fen. It was obvious that Magnus wasn’t convinced by Isabelle’s lie in the slightest, but I personally wished that Magnus had pressed her a little harder. I also have to wonder if Magnus going to tell Alec. I honestly think that Magnus should tell him because Isabelle is going down a dark and dangerous downward spiral and right now it’s not even on Alec’s radar; which I think it needs to be.
I also want to discuss the Cleophas and Luke’s scenes. I really loved the conflict between Luke and Cleophas. To me, their dynamic was the most interesting thing during this entire episode. One hand Luke knows she is part of the Circle, but on the hand, Cleophas is family and still his sister. To me, this fascinating dichotomy is really something I would like to see more of during the second half of the season.
