After slogging through all the fuckery that was chapter five, it was sort of refreshing to read chapter six. This chapter happens to be the third non-filler chapter in the first part of this book. I still think that it’s one filler chapter too many, but I’m going to let that rant go for now. As for this chapter, it was entertaining, but don’t think for one second that it wasn’t chocked full of plotholes and more problematic shit than you can shake a stick at. Unfortunately, before I can get into that, let’s first talk about what I loved about this chapter.
What I Loved
At the top of the list is of course the fantastic interaction between Madame Dorothea and Jace. By now, it shouldn’t surprise to anyone that I fucking despise Jace. So again I state that I cheer anyone who stands up to him, and takes a chunk out of Jace’s enormous ego.
Madame Dorothea just said everything that I had been saying since the get go, and was not even a little bit impressed with the *child* that was trying to intimidate her. She took exactly none of Jace’s shit, and I was here for every word of it!
I was also pleasantly surprised that Madame Dorothea’s revealed that she was a Downworlder. I mean, I actually thought that she was a fraud, yet in reality Dorothea was hiding in plain sight. Which was a brilliant move on both Clare’s and Dorothea’s part. Clare made it seem that Dorothea herself was just a senile old woman. And there were only one or two indicators that Dorothea could be supernatural. The biggest indicator in my mind was Dorothea’s mysterious visitor, and Clary’s reaction to him.
Surprisingly, Clare didn’t tip her hand once. She planted just enough foreshadowing to make the reveal interesting, which is something I wish she would do more. One of my biggest issues with Clare as a writer is that she is really heavy-handed, and obvious when it comes to her plot twists. For example, it has been pretty obvious since chapter two that both Jocelyn and Clary are Shadowhunters. In comparison, the Dorothea reveal was fantastically done and genuinely took me by surprise. So kudos to Clare for a spot of good writing on her part.
Another thing I especially loved about this chapter was of course Clary slapping Jace. In the elevator, Jace told Clary that he was 90% sure that Clary was a Shadowhunter. Clary then once again bitch slaps him, and goes on to tell him that she slapped him was for the “other ten percent.”
No lie, I literally stood up from out of my chair and applauded. This is the second slap Clary has given Jace, and just like the other one back in Chapter 3, he more than fucking deserved it. Unfortunately, further into this chapter, Clary stripes away all of that enjoyment away by apologizing to Jace. I will most diffidently will be discussing it (and by discuss I mean ranting) about it later on in this review.
