Did those words actually come out of Clary’s mouth? Yeah, she lives in Brooklyn, but at the time this book was set (which was in August 2007) Brooklyn was a very expensive neighborhood to live in. It’s no longer a crime ridden lower-income borough like it was in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Since Brooklyn was gentrified in the early 2000’s, it has since become way too expensive for working class families to live there. Cassandra Clare is trying to once again claim that Clary comes from a lower income background. However, my own research says otherwise: according to this article from ‘The Observer’ the annual rent in Brooklyn was a $441,000 that year. Clary actually lives in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Park Slope. Clary and (and I assume) Simon both go to St. Xavier’s School, which admittedly we don’t have a lot detail about, but it really sounds to me like a private Catholic school. Now, I will admit that Alec was way out of line with his snobbish attitude, but as I just proven Clary’s defense was just as ridiculous.
