So you remember when Hodge said that Clary was smart because she well read? Yeah, this right here proves without a doubt that Hodge’s assumption was like %100 wrong because Clary is, in reality, is dumber than a bag of rocks. It might be talking to someone who has been thoroughly spoiled when it comes to this plot twist (by both Clare herself and the show) but if I was put in Clary’s situation, the first thing I would have thought was, “Oh shit, Valentine’s my father.” Clary never not once ,even considers it . So despite Clare trying to tell us through Hodge that Clary is clever, I really won’t ever believe it, especially after this reading this passage.
Another thing that bothers me about Clary’s reaction is that it’s been more than obvious from the get go that Jocelyn was shady as fuck. Yet, Clary is still denying the possibility that her mother could have kept anything from her. Later on in this scene, Clary does admit to this, but right now she stubbornly and sturdily doesn’t want to hear it. Despite my annoyance at her in the previous chapters, I could possibly forgive those earlier reactions because most people don’t want to think the worst of the people they love. However, at this point, a quarter into the book, it’s getting more than a bit ridiculous.
