I have been in the ‘Shadowhunters’ and by proxy ‘The Mortal Instruments’ fandom for over six months. And one of the things I have heard over and over from Cassandra Clare and her book fans, in particular, is how wonderful and epic Clary and Jace’s relationship is. I have already talked ad nauseam how verbally abusive Jace is towards Clary. How, every time Clary calls Jace on his bullshit, she is very quick to apologize for it. By the way, you’re going to get a big example of that later on in this chapter.
Yet, as epic and awesome Clary and Jace’s relationship is supposed to be, this kiss is boring and unemotional. I have read dozens of Harlequin romances (don’t judge) and I have seen more emotion, more chemistry, more passion in all those books than what I see between Clary and Jace throughout this entire freaking book.
I mean, this is their first kiss, and there is literally zero real emotion behind it Sure, there is a bit of lust during the kiss, but there is none of the underlining romantic feelings Clary and Jace are supposed to have for each other are shown or thought about before or after their first kiss. Yet, I’m supposed to think that Clary and Jace’s relationship is just so fantastic?
I’m going to be frank, I don’t think that Clary and Jace’s relationship is anything but teenage infatuation. Yes, they have more on-screen conversations then say, Edward and Bella’s relationship from Twilight. Yet, for the most part, all we have seen Clary talk about is how beautiful Jace is. She never really thinks about the things they might have in common with him or about his values, or how treats other people. I know that is very important to me when I’m considering getting into a relationship with someone. Unfortunately, all that matters with Clary is that Jace is freaking hot.
*shaking my head* Honestly, I’m just so bored right now. The more I read this book, the more I realize that Clace is far from being an epic romance for the ages. It’s just as boring, problematic as the next YA couple.
