It goes without saying that Magnus Bane so far has been my favorite character from the show, and the movie. So I was more than chomping at the bit to finally see if the books lived up to my expectations.
Unfortunately, Magnus Bane in the books was a complete and utter let down. A lot of his interaction with our protagonists were completely illogical and didn’t leave a good impression. I mean on the show, Magnus’s introduction was totally badass and I was immediately captivated. And even in the horrible movie, Geoffrey Gao brought his own special brand of glamor and awesomeness to the role. So to finally see Magnus Bane in the books was a complete and utter let down.
So first off thing I really had an issue was with the”part Asian” part of the description. I know from my own research that Magnus is Indonesian and half-demon. So why would he look biracial? I can understand that he would demonic characteristics because his father was a demon. Yet, does Clare mean to tell me that his demon father was white? It just doesn’t make sense.
I also want to talk about Magnus answering his door, and escorting our protagonists to the party makes no sense with his supposedly high position as High Warlock of Brooklyn. Why would some with such high status in the Shadowworld not hire Bouncers to vet people at the door and to act as security? The only way this would make sense if it was a way for Clare to show us that Magnus being High Warlock of Brooklyn was only lip service. Yet, I personally don’t think that was Clare’s original intention. So why would Clare write Magnus’s introduction this way? It just doesn’t make any sense.
