Now, I admit that I might have my “Harry Potter” glasses on too tight, and with Cassandra Clare’s history in the HP fandom I tend to zoom on things that remind me too much of Harry Potter. However, Hodge Starkweather reminds me too much of Dumbledore. Seriously, at one point I was expecting his blue eyes to twinkle. The part that made me side-eye Hodge the most was his interaction with his raven, Hugo. It really felt like Cassandra Clare was writing Dumbledore and Fawkes instead of two completely original characters. I was especially skeptical when the raven just disappeared like Fawkes did in the Harry Potter books. Why didn’t she change this? I mean Clare had to know that people would side eye any similarities to Harry Potter since City of Bones was directly derived from her fan fiction series, ‘The Draco Trilogy’.
