So this chapter takes place three days after Clary was attacked by The Ravener. I talked about this last week, but I wanted to once again ask: why hasn’t anyone done any tests on Clary yet? I mean, a good DNA test would answer a lot of questions about what Clary is.
Now, I might be just basing this off the show, ‘Shadowhunters’, and you guys who are more familiar with the books correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the Institute have access to a lot of technology? And if they didn’t have technology like The Wizarding World in the ‘Harry Potter’ books, then you would think that the Shadowhunters would be advanced enough to have access to a magical spell or object that can determine the origin of someone species.
Yet, we are at least two or three pages into Chapter Five and there has yet to be any indication in the narrative that any tests have been conducted at all. I would also state that it’s very clear from this passage, and from the rest of this scene that no one has done any research into Clary’s past. If they did a background check on Clary, her mother’s shady past would have instantly come up. Speaking of her mother, why hasn’t anyone at the institute investigated the possibility that either of Clary’s parents had been a Shadowhunter. I would suspect that it wouldn’t take long at all to go through their records (I’m assuming that they keep records) and pull up all missing Shadowhunters.
I’m not asking them to be Veronica Mars or Dick Tracy, but these are simple and logical conclusions that would pop up if our heroes get up off their asses and actually do some actual investigation. It would take very little solve the mystery behind Clary’s species and what happened to Jocelyn . This is just pure laziness on both Cassandra Clare’s and The Shadowhunter’s part. At this point, it’s more than clear that Clare is just trying to drag out the big reveal that Jocelyn was a Shadowhunter that much longer.
