Wow, here it goes with the Mary Sue trope to end all Mary Sue tropes. The plain normal looking girl who gets the good-looking guy. It’s a trope as old as time, and is really popular in the YA genre. Clare also went so far to describe Clary as clumsy. And it could almost been ripped straight out of ‘Twilight’. It makes it real easy for a teenage girl to slip into Clary’s shoes. Now, most people say that Clary is Clare’s self insert because of the name similarities. I thought so too, but reading this makes me wonder if Jocelyn is not her self insert Jocelyn seems to be a more ideal avatar for Clare, which itself has a lot of ugly implications that I rather not think about. I mean Clare even goes to so far as to have Clary call Jocelyn a Barbie Doll.
I have never seen a mother and daughter team that is much sue-tastic as Clary and Jocelyn are. It’s just really strange, and again not at all subtle. Also, it feels like Clare has never met a real artist herself, because she seems to be throwing in those artist clichés in by a mile. And as artist (or rather a Graphic Designer), this cliché really burns my buttons. Seriously, Jocelyn is one step away from wearing a beret and lamenting about her tortured soul.
