Oh, Clary loves Jocelyn and she just wants her back!. Now, normally this would be a touching moment. However, what I neglected to tell you dear readers about this touching scene is that this is the first time in both the dialogue and narrative that we have explicitly witnessed Clary truly worried about her mother. Yeah, Clary talks about Jocelyn, but up to this point there has been no hint of concern, worry, or panic throughout this chapter. My mother and I are very close, and best believe that if I had heard my mother being attacked from over the phone, and then subsequently been kidnapped, I would have been practically frantic with worry.
It literally took Clary thirteen pages to start thinking of a way to get her mother back, and it took her EIGHT PAGES to even bring up her mother at all. Does that sound like someone who has a close relationship with their mother? No! This is yet another instance of Clare TELLING and not SHOWING. I hate that shit so much! It’s actually one of my top pet peeves when it comes to writing.
If Clary really loved her mother, she would not have been instantly distracted by Jace, and all the shiny new things around her. Her first question upon waking should have been, “Where is my mother?” This is our main character, our heroine for at least the next six books folks. Isn’t Clary Fray great guys?
