Trigger Warnings :for talk of child abuse, child death, and child slavery. You have been warned!
Yeah, I really didn’t see this plot twist coming. This is the first plot twist that just came out nowhere and sucker punched me, and it’s not a good thing. I literally had to stop myself from punting my laptop out of the window when I read this, because this, this is fucking horrifying, and it just pushes all my anger buttons. I’m really protective of children, and it really enrages me to no end when people fuck over children in any way. So this right here instantly makes me want to start stabbing folks. However, I got some points to make before I can start really screaming:
- It’s really horrifying that Valentine is willing to use the cup to basically kidnap children and make them into soldiers. However, the horrible implications of this is also two-sided, because Hodge basically spelled that The Shadowhunter’s community has been doing the exact same thing with the cup for thousands of years.. There are only two ways for Shadowhunters to propagate 1) genetically (by birth) or 2) by using the mortal cup.
- It’s later revealed in this chapter that there is indeed a birth crisis, and due to massive influx of demons over the last few generations a lot of Shadowhunters have been killed. Jocelyn has only had the cup for fifteen years, and it had have been in the Clave for the rest of the time. If you read between the lines, Hodge has basically said that Clave has been actively using the cup before it was stolen. So basically, Shadowhunters are all too willing to go out there and steal children from the homes, and force them into being soldiers. Not only that, all the children have to go through hazardous tests to even qualify to be active Shadowhunters, and a good majority of these children won’t even survive. And spoiler alert: Those children who pass the test and become Shadowhunters don’t even get to rest in peace after their dead, because their remains are used to build and maintain the Silent Brother’s HQ, The City of Bones. They are basically slaves in both life and death. This is Hunger Games levels of fuckery, but you know what at least Snow who sent children to their deaths was written as the bad guy. However, in this story we are supposed to think The Shadowhunters are so awesome.Yet they are essentially snatching these kids from their homes, from their parents, and making them into virtual slaves to fight in a supernatural war!
- I’m going to move on from the horrible implications before I throw up, okay? Let’s talk about the logic fails of Valentine little plan, shall we? Okay, first of all, what the fuck are untrained children going to do against a force of experienced warriors? Seriously, if Valentine had the time to raise these children and indoctrinate them with his views that would be one thing, but he’s planning on turning these children and using them now, like that is not going to end badly on his part.
Now, that I’m done, I’m going to crawl underneath my chair and pretend like I never saw this. And if anyone would be so kind please send me brain bleach and chocolate I would be forever grateful.
