“You had no right to do what you did!” she snapped at him, suddenly furious. “Lying to
me like that. You had no right—”
“I had every right!” he shouted. She didn’t think he’d ever shouted at her before. “I had
every right, you stupid, stupid girl. I’m your brother and I—”
“And you what? You own me? You don’t own me, whether you’re my brother or not!”
— City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
Chapter 6: Bad Blood
Okay, I’m getting whiplash, because I was defending or rather agreeing with Jace in the last post. And now, I’m agreeing with Clary. Jace is just her older brother, who didn’t help raise her. Didn’t have any sibling relationship (and still doesn’t) and he doesn’t own her. He’s not her parent or her legal guardian and he has literally no say in what the fuck Clary Fray does with her life. Again, Jace has been objectifying Clary and treating her more like a favorite pet than a person with actual agency. Also, by Clare’s own writing, Jace is not just Clary’s brother. He’s also her love interest, and later who will be her (spoiler alert) her boyfriend.
No one has the right to treat a romantic partner this way. How many times do I have to say: JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE FEELINGS FOR SOMEONE DOES NOT MEAN YOU OWN THEM! For fuck’s sake, this shit makes me want to throw all something at Clare for writing this shit. Jace had no right to go over her head to Simon and both make the decision that Clary was not to go on this trip. Only Luke, had a say so if Clary should go to Idris or not. This is because until her mother awakens, he is her LEGAL GUARDIAN.
Honestly, I hate that Clare is telling preteen and teenage girls that this behavior is okay when it is far from it.
