Clary hadn’t been to a graveyard since the night Simon had died, and the memory gave
her a bone-deep shiver as she passed along the narrow lanes that threaded among the
mausoleums like white ribbon. Someone took care of this place: The marble gleamed as if
freshly scrubbed, and the grass was evenly cut. There were bunches of white owers laid
here and there on the graves; she thought at rst they were lilies, but they had a spicy,
unfamiliar scent that made her wonder if they were native to Idris. Each tomb looked like a
little house; some even had metal or wire gates, and the names of Shadowhunter families
were carved over the doors. CARTWRIGHT. MERRYWEATHER. HIGHTOWER. BLACKWELL.
MIDWINTER. She stopped at one: HERONDALE.
She turned to look at Luke. “That was the Inquisitor’s name.”
“This is her family tomb. Look.” He pointed. Beside the door were white letters cut into
the gray marble. They were names. MARCUS HERONDALE. STEPHEN HERONDALE. They
had both died in the same year. Much as Clary had hated the Inquisitor, she felt something
twist inside her, a pity she couldn’t help. To lose your husband and your son, so close
together … Three words in Latin ran under Stephen’s name: AVE ATQUE VALE.

Chapter 3: Amatis
I think I got a headache! Can we talk about for a moment how these Shadowhunter names make zero sense ??? I know these names are a throwback to this series’s Harry Potter fanfiction past. Yet, Clare had two books to try to come up with something original and it still doesn’t make any sense for the region Idris is set in. I pointed out when we discovered the Shadowhunters are actually named after the first Shadowhunter ironically named “Jonathan Shadowhunter.” Let me remind you that Idris was created out of a land that was between normal day Germany and Switzerland. It is logical conclude like a lot of modern-day countries, that it could have been part of either Switzerland or Germany. It would then also make sense that the names would have German or Swiss or even French (because French is a language some people still speak in that country) derivatives rather than English ones.
These are the names of their oldest families, and they historically do not make any sense! There is a reason why Harry Potter names are the way they are. A good portion of the names is Latin or Greek-inspired such as Severus Snape, or Albus Dumbledore with Anglo names. It’s a nod to a society that actively uses Latin in their everyday life via their spells or potions. It’s an overall theme, and it actually makes historical sense to me since Britain was at one time part of the Roman Empire, and Latin and Greek was taught in schools in the UK as late as the 1960’s.
So this is a side note, but I can’t help but add that as a high school elective (because I went to a rich white school) I took Latin as an elective and that shit is hard. If you can read or speak Latin I tip my hat to you!
Anyway, back to my point! Now, with these names I have few more points, I would like to discuss. First and Surname is a relatively new invention. People in the UK especially didn’t start using surnames until the 15th century and even then it took another century or so before it was fully adopted by the Scots and Welsh people. Also according to Wikipedia, Germans didn’t start using surnames until the late from anywhere 1200-1500s. However, since all but a few names are English surnames I’m going with English history. If my research is correct (and please tell me if I made a mistake) they couldn’t be more than 500 or so years old, especially since a lot of these names are ENGLISH surnames! Anyway, Surnames were often referring to Nicknames, Occupations, or Place of Birth. So I have to ask again: HOW OLD ARE SHADOWHUNTERS??
Honestly, the more I keep digging into the history, the more that it doesn’t make sense. I mean, if demons were such a problem, why did Raziel wait until around 500 years ago to do something about a problem? Are you telling me that Raziel just sat there for centuries before he actually got off his ass and did something? *rolls eyes*
