“That blood I gave you,” Aldertree said, “is all the blood you’ll see until you give me a different answer.” There was no kindness in his voice, not even false kindness. “You’d be surprised how thirsty you can get.”
Simon said nothing.
“Another night in the cells, then,” the Inquisitor said, rising to his feet and reaching for a bell to summon the guards. “It’s quite peaceful down there, isn’t it? I do find that a peaceful atmosphere can help with a little problem of memory—don’t you?”

Chapter 5: A Problem With Memory
For the record let me clear a few things up. Aldertree is the Head Law Enforcement Officer in the country. He’s basically like a mixture of Judge Dredd and U.S.Attorney General. Simon Lewis is a sixteen year old minor who was detained for no probable cause. Actually, Simon is a victim, and although Aldertree suspects that Simon purposely asked to be murdered and turned in a vampire. Aldertree has zero proof to back up his own suspicions. Aldertree also didn’t read Simon his Miranda Rights. Then Aldertree interrogated Simon (a minor) without the presence of his parent or without offering attorney. If this happened in the United States, and Aldertree worked for the U.S Government. This would be literally a violation of Miranda Rights.
Honestly, people have been fired or suspended and cases being thrown out of court for less than this. I don’t know about European countries laws but I know that some of this must be a violation of civil rights in there as well. Honestly, if the Shadowhunters didn’t have such a dystopian nightmare for a Government, someone would be fired Aldertree for this.
And not only that, Simon is going to be detained, starving for god know many days. Can we say violation of Geneva conventions? Honestly, if the Shadowhunters wasn’t hiding they would have so many sanctions on them that could give North Korea or Russia a run for their money.
Aldertree is a monster, and he’s the Head Law Enforcement Officer of Idris. This is the second Inquisitor I have personally seen decide to ignore human decency and their own laws to do what they want. I have to say this as well: Isn’t this a violation of the accords? Again, it would be nice to actually know what is in the accords, but surely if the Downworlders were even modicum of intelligent they would have some provision about the unjust torture of their people.
Also, I just thought of this, but yeah Aldertree can make it seem that Simon disappeared. However, what about his coven and sire? They are just going to let Shadowhunters unjustly torture and detain one of their own without a fight? This could mean war with the vampires and can put the accords in jeopardy. For his supposed cleverness, Aldertree never considers that and honestly, this makes me think that the accords is just a pretty piece of paper and completely useless.
