By the time Simon and Jace came back into the living room, Aline had laid food out on the
low table between the couches. There were bread and cheese, slices of cake, apples, and
even a bottle of wine, which Max was not allowed to touch. He sat in the corner with a
plate of cake, his book open on his lap. Simon sympathized with him. He felt just as alone
in the laughing, chatting group as Max probably did.
He watched Aline touch Jace’s wrist with her fingers as she reached for a piece of apple,
and felt himself tense. But this is what you want him to do, he told himself, and yet somehow
he couldn’t get rid of the sense that Clary was being disregarded.

Chapter 3: Amatis
Wow, Aline (because this her house) is the worst host ever. Seriously, who treats there guests this way? I can sort of understand Aline ignoring Simon because she is a bigoted jackass! However, Max is a Nephilim just like her and she is ignoring him. Hell, his siblings are still ignoring him and not trying to include him in the conversation at all even though they know that Max doesn’t have anyone his age to talk to. Honestly, when I see book fans talk how they would love to meet their favorite characters I can’t help but side-eye them
Everyone in this book is an asshole because Clare herself is an asshole. No, I’m not being hyperbolic or unjustly mean to her. Cassandra Clare has a long and sordid history of being a huge bully both on and offline. Clare tends to bully anyone who doesn’t bow down to her and kiss her ass. Honestly, Clare is the monster that we, the early online fandom community made. She was BNF that got away with a lot of fandom before she crossed that final line of plagiarism. To be honest, we as a community should have checked her from the very beginning. And honestly, all of her abhorrent personality just oozes into, every character in this book.
The only person who is slightly immune is Maia.
And we will see how Clare reward Maia for her awesomeness later on. Spoiler Alert: It’s not pretty at all. To be honest, if I could hang out with any character it would be Xena or Buffy Summers. They both have their asshole moments, but they are way more awesome than these rude ass bitches.
Back to the main point of this post. Why is Max even in this series? I asked it last week, and I’m going to ask it again. Why write a character that is practically useless and has no purpose? I have been saying this since the beginning but the Lightwoods should have never been written. Actually, Clare keeps adding more characters and expect for Sebastian the rest of them are just as useless to the overall plot. This series would have been way better if she had cut like 90% of the characters from the books.
