The small man came to a halt before Alec and Simon and beamed at them both. “We’re so glad—pleased, really—that you decided to cooperate with our request that you return to New York. It does make everything so much easier.” He twinkled at Simon, who stared back at him in confusion. He didn’t think he’d ever met a Shadowhunter who seemed pleased to see him—not when he was a mundane, and definitely not now that he was a vampire.
“Oh, I almost forgot!” The little man slapped himself on the forehead in remorse. “I should have introduced myself. I’m the Inquisitor—the new Inquisitor. Inquisitor Aldertree is my name.”
— City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
Chapter Four: Daylighter
Wow, so the introduction of Aldertree was so much better done in the show! Also, have you seen the Nick Sagan? I mean hate his character, but oh my god that dude is hot. Way hotter than the original book character if there was anything to go by. Honestly, when I come across shit the show has done better than the book, I continue to wonder if the Books!stans are truly that delusional.
Also, I do have to point out that as far as villains go, he is slightly better. He’s not twisting his mustache like Valentine seems to do. I have read ahead, and he is slightly smarter than Imogen. Again, Imogen was the only woman character attached to the Clave and who has some power in this universe. As I said back in “City of Ashes”, she was obviously dumbed down and basically reduced to a caricature that wasn’t as half as scary as her original character Dolores Umbridge. Honestly, it just continues to speak to Clare’s own faux feminism.
Now my last point is this: It’s three books in and I have to say that Clare has yet to actually break away from original Harry Potter fanfiction. I don’t know about you guys, but for me, it’s pretty indicative that Clare honestly doesn’t have an original bone in her body. Almost everything in this series is ripped off from something and the character Aldertree is no different.
Now don’t quote me on this, but I have a strong idea that this guy was once Cornelius Fudge. The physical characteristics are similar and his personality reminds me of Fudge. Just like Idris is clearly Hogwarts and Hogsmeade respectfully. Maybe it’s futile, but I keep waiting for Clare to make this series truly her own, and she never does.
I don’t why I keep giving into an obviously futile hope, but honestly, in this raw material that is the TMI series there is a lot of potentials and it’s just sad to see such potential go to waste.
