“Things are changing. The Laws are changing. The old ways
may never be the right ways again. Just as the rebellion of the angels ended the world as it
was—it split heaven in half and created hell—this could mean the end of the Nephilim as
they currently exist. This is our war in heaven, vampire, and only one side can win it. And
my father means it to be his.”
– City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
Chapter 3: Amatis
Warning: I’m going to be giving some controversial thoughts about God and theology as a whole. If you are easily offended by this please give this post a pass.
STOP TRYING TO MAKE VALENTINE INTO LUCIFER!
Jesus fucking Christ! Clare keeps telling us over, and over, and over again how Valentine is so bad. Valentine is so bad that his name is Morgenstern which is basically meaning “Morning Star”. And as anyone who has even basic knowledge of the bible knows that Lucifer means “Morning Star” because he was the brightest of God’s angels. *facepalm*
Actually, as a brief tangent, Morgenstern is one of the few German names from the old families that we will see in this book. And it’s Clary and the bad guy’s surname. It actually originally comes from Ashkenazic Jewish Hebrew. So yeah, one name that actually fits Idris’s supposed physical location.
Back to the Valentine and Lucifer parallel, Clare is trying to hamfisted shove down our throats. Clare is completely wrong. Idris is not Heaven, and The Clave is sure as hell is not God. First of all, if you have even tangential knowledge of the Bible, you will know that we are made in God’s image and thus God is a deeply flawed being. I’m not going to discuss if you believe in god or not, or all the theology that goes with it. This is fact. God is jealous, God is easy to anger, god kills innocent people. This is all ripped straight from the bible.
Again, God is a deeply flawed being, but no matter how you feel about his actions in the bible, you can not deny that God is not Idle. He is always doing something, always got a plan going on. Despite his flaws, he sometimes sends help to his people. Often by his own intermediaries, his Angels. And just like God, old testament (which a lot of Shadowhunters mythology is ripped from) Angels were deeply flawed.
They got prideful (Lucifer), they had Angels sex with human women created the original Nephilim, they killed people and many other sins. They were not perfect beings. Again, they are God’s creations and thus they are flawed as he is. However, Angels fucking worked. They helped people and fought wars and battles. The original angels were fucking bad ass and I know someone who is more versed in Angelic lore can give a better picture all this.
So my point is that The Clave and the Shadowhunters are not God and his Angels. No, they don’t do anything but lay on their asses and be pretentious dicks. Honestly, I have no idea how The Downworlders and Demons haven’t risen up and taken over the mundane world yet.
And the second part of this fucked up parallel is Lucifer. Honestly, this is a fucking insult to Lucifer. Valentine is a complete dumbass. This man makes elementary mistakes and has no sense of even basic strategy. Lucifer would whoop Valentine’s ass no sweat. And not just because Lucifer is the HBIC of hell. No, Lucifer fucking lead an army of Angels against God, and Valentine can barely keep his circle in order. The one big battle with demons, we ever had in “City of Angels” and Valentine wasn’t even leading them. The demons were basically doing whatever they wanted.
So inclusion: This is a very wrong and very forced parallel that doesn’t work at all. And Honestly, Clare needs to learn how to write better.
