So I am going to spoil you guys right off the bat because yet again Cassandra Clare is not fooling anybody but herself. The person who is responsible for this murder was, in fact, Valentine.
The reason why we know for a fact it was Valentine, was because he told the demon Agramon that he wanted the warlock’s blood. So, we can only conclude that his plan for the warlock is connected to this. The other reason I say this is because in the way that Freaky Pete said he found the killer position and over the boy’s body. From the subtext of what he was saying, it really felt like he was collecting something from it.
So is it was indeed Valentine, then my question becomes what does he have to gain from doing this? Again, If I had the benefit of the doubt left in Cassandra Clare I wouldn’t be questioning this so hard. I would have known that Clare would have answered this question by the end of the book. However, after reading “City of Bones” in which she enclosed any of her storylines from that particular book, I don’t have any faith that any of the questions she brings up in this book will be answered in any satisfying manner.
So now back to my original question: what is Valentine’s motivation for doing this? And I really don’t have any idea. Because once again he has the moral cup and he wants the Mortal Cup to create a child army. Yet, we have seen no real evidence so far (although admittedly we are still in the second chapter) that he had done nothing to further that particular goal during the time between this book and the previous book.
Cassandra Clare cannot be consistent at all when it comes to Valentine’s motivations, and it’s really damaging her overall story.
