ETA: Sorry that this is late. I made an error with the scheduling this post.
Aw, the return of the two-way mirror from Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix. Yes, I saying she blatantly ripped that off from Harry Potter, but what else is new in this twice damned book series?
Yet, while it made sense for Harry to keep the mirror shards of the two-way mirror his godfather gave him after he died for sentimental reasons. The situation here is completely different. Sirius never abused Harry, Sirius never tried to play with Harry’s mind, Sirius almost never lied to Harry. Actually, Sirius gave Harry that mirror because he loved Harry and he wanted to keep in constant contact with his godson.
While the mirror shard here in this book is a piece of the portal that Valentine used to once again abandoning his own son after mentally abusing him. I have defended Jace’s conflict over still loving his father. As I said, it’s really common for abused to kids to love their abusers (especially if their abusers are their parents). However, I find it a little creepy that Jace would hold on the piece of the tool that his own father used to abandon him with.
I also have to say, if Jace is still after all this time adamant that he can probably still see his father and maybe get a glimpse of what he is up to then it’s quite possible that it possibly work the same way for Valentine. And if that is the case, Jace is leaving what equates to a remote hidden camera for Valentine to use to spy on them. This is yet another security risk, and I don’t get how Jace or Clary never figures this out.
The last thing I want to discuss is the role of ‘High Warlock of Brooklyn’. The way Clare wrote it back in ‘City of Bones’ it made me feel that basically title that Magnus added to his name to make himself important. Now, admittedly that I might have missed something in the midst of that chapter that further explained that this was a real title with real responsibilities and powers attached to it.
Yet, we have yet to see Magnus show that he has any responsibilities at all as High Warlock of Brooklyn. We have not seen him be a leader at all or interact with his fellow Warlock. It really feels that this is another case of ‘Tell but now Show’ on Clare’s part. This also makes me wonders if there are other Warlocks held terrorities throughout the world or at the very least in New York City? Is there a High Warlock of Manhattan out there?
Again, this can be a bit of interesting world building on Clare’s part, but she always writes and world builds very superficially. It’s always narrowed down to her book series, and her current setting, and this is proof positive why that is a horrible way to write.
