You know what, I bet you were just feeling sorry for poor, poor, Simon. It’s okay, I know I was, but then, like freaking always, Simon says something that instantly dissolves any sympathy that I might otherwise have for him. I always said that Simon thinks of Clary not as a friend or now as a romantic partner. Simon thinks of Clary as an object that he’s entitled to because he put in a lot of years of being a friend. Then add in every time Cassandra Clare has written a POV scene Simon’s every thought is about Clary.
This is not only possession but obsession as well. So, that is a nasty mix that basically makes Simon and Clary’s relationship (romantic or platonic) toxic as hell. However, I want to move on to a bigger concept: ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS ARE NOT ABOUT OWNERSHIP!
No one owns, Clary, because despite the fact I hate the bitch, she is still a human being and not an object to be brought or won. No one in the relationship, male or female owns their romantic partner. I may be on the aromantic side of things, but even I know from watching other people’s relationships that a good healthy romantic relationship is almost always a partnership.
Yet, Cassandra Clare is peddling this toxic message about romantic relationships and objectification to young impressionable girls. Honestly, Clare should be ashamed of herself for writing this entire storyline into her novels.
