Last week, I talked about the reveal about the Inquisitor’s son Stephen that Luke initially brought up a few chapters back. The last chapter, Jace brought back up by accusing the Inquisitor that the reason she was so gung-ho about the entire situation was that of Stephen. It was pretty obvious that he brought it up to make himself look clever (he failed miserably).
So now, we get this long dry info dump about Stephen (that, in my opinion, wasn’t necessary at all). And we find that out that Stephen the Inquisitor’s son was Luke’s replacement. Not only that, Stephen was practically perfect in every way. Does anyone see the similarities between Joceyeln and Stephen?
Cassandra Clare just can’t help herself, she is addicted to writing Mary and Gary Sues. It’s like eating potatoes chips: she can’t stop at just one! Just reading about Stephen, make me roll my eyes. I know what Clare was going for: The golden boy corrupted. However, the effect of the trope is lessened when you have so many sues who by design are supposed to be perfect.
Clearly, the whole character of Stephen Herondale fails on every level.
