I’m sorry to keep having to say this, but it bears repeating: FUCK. YOU. CLARE! This has to be one of the most racist parts of this book so far. You know want why? There are only two people of color in this god forsaken book, and both are portrayed horribly.
One of them, Raphael Santiago, looks and acts like a stereotypical Cholo. Seriously, he is such a stereotype that he could have been easily an extra from the movie ‘Blood in Blood Out.’
Because apparently, to Clare, all Latinos, all Mexican-Americans are poor gangsters who’s every third word they speak is in Spanish. Maybe this gross generalization wouldn’t have been so jarring to me if there was more than one Latino character in this series so far. But no, our one bit of Latino representation is Raphael ‘Cholo’ Santiago.
Now, moving on to our second minority. Magnus Bane who is one of two Queer people in this book so far, but is also our only Asian character. And here he is unrepentantly stealing from stores. This is basically Clare reinforcing the stereotype that we, as people of color, are nothing but criminals. As a black person, I have found that not only me personally but my entire family have been affected by this gross generalization about people of color. Especially black people. My parents and I have both had store employees, and random white people follow us around a store. Apparently in their minds black equals criminal in their eyes. I know for a fact, that this type of encounter happens a lot to not only black people, but to all people of color, no matter their class.
Again, this Clare reinforcing the theme of damaging racist stereotypes from someone who supposed to be an ally. Clare wrote this, and yet she continues to always brag about how she cares about people of color and diversity. This is not diversity, this is not inclusion, this is racism plain and simple.
