She fastened the gate shut behind her and went looking for Simon. He was in the back garden, as promised, lying on a plastic lounging chair with a comic open in his lap. He pushed it aside when he saw Clary, sat up, and grinned. “Hey, baby.”
“Baby?” She perched beside him on the chair. “You’re kidding me, right?”
“I was trying it out. No?”
“No,” she said firmly, and leaned over to kiss him on the mouth. When she drew back, his fingers lingered in her hair, but his eyes were thoughtful. […]
He leaned back against the chair. “What is? Besides you, of course.”
“Reliable? Is that how you think of me?” she demanded in mock indignation. “That’s not very romantic.”
A shadow passed across his face. “Clary…” […]
“Everything’s one or the other,” Clary said. “Just tell me you’re all right.”
“I’m all right,” he said. “But—I don’t think we should see each other anymore.”
Clary almost fell off the lounge chair. “You don’t want to be friends anymore?”
“Is it because of the demons? Because I got you turned into a vampire?” Her voice was rising higher and higher. “I know everything’s been crazy, but I can keep you away from all that. I can—”
Simon winced. “You’re starting to sound like a dolphin, do you know that? Stop.”
“I still want to be friends,” he said. “It’s the other stuff I’m not so sure about.” […]
— “City of Ashes’ by Cassandra Clare
Okay, take a look at these snippets and tell me that I’m not the only one who got emotional whiplash? In the first two snippets, they are both acting like Simon didn’t have front row seats for when Clary basically cheated on him by kissing Jace in front the whole Seelie Court. Or how Simon caught Clary admitting that she still has romantic feelings for Jace in Luke’s hallway. Actually, it seems that everyone including Cassandra Clare herself has seemed forgotten that Simon and Clary broke up the first time a few minutes later outside of Luke’s house.
He was actually walking home from Luke’s that night when was initially kidnapped by Valentine. Yet, again it’s all water under the bridge in the first two snippets. Hell, he is even calling her ‘baby’ moments before he breaks up with Clary for the second time!
Yet, there is no resentment and no hard feelings on Simon’s part. Hell, in all honestly Simon should still be pissed that Clary let him turn into a vampire. There should still be loads of anger and resentment on Simon’s part. Honestly, to me, this feels out of character, for Simon because when did we ever get the impression that Simon is live and let live type of person?
If you weren’t paying attention, dear readers, this is what separates Mary/Gary sues from regular characters. Regular characters (much like people in real life) has to face consequences for their actions, but Mary/Gary sues never do! Everyone just loves them and thinks the best of them no matter what horrible things they do.
This is why Clary Fray will always be a one-dimensional Mary Sue and nothing more. This is because Clare refuses to allow Clary to face any real consequences for her actions, and as a result will never grow into a real character.
Now, that I’m done with that tangent I want to talk about one last thing. I don’t understand why we needed this scene at all when it’s obvious that Clare needs to wrap up so many other storylines. Right off the bat, these are the questions that need to be answered: What is The Clave going to do now? And what is The Clave going to do about the death of the Inquisitor and her apparently going rogue? What about all the demons Valentine released into the world? Is Maia even okay?
All of that I that I just listed is never brought up, instead we get Simon breaking up with Clary for the second time like we didn’t already have this scene. Every little plot thread, even in the fucking epilogue is taken up by this faux love triangle. Just like in Twilight, anyone with a working brain cell knew that Bella was going to choose Edward in the end.
The whole Team Jacob and Team Edward thing was a complete farce, and the Simon/Clary/Jace love triangle is no different. Yet, There is only 1% of this epilogue that is not dedicated to this so-called “love triangle” and it pisses me the hell off!
