Cassandra Clare and her army of stans love to bandy around the insinuation that this is a pro-woman and feminist book series. Of course, I have already pointed out ad nausueum why that rhetoric is completely false. But, since this is really the first really sexist comment of the book, I thought would give it the attention it fucking deserved.
Admittedly, I wouldn’t have been so offended, if Clare didn’t have a long history of misogyny and sexism in not only in her books but in her own public actions as well. I could have just brushed this off as just bit a teasing between boyfriend and girlfriend. However, since Clare does a history misogyny, this freaking offends the hell out of me.
I read the subtext in this passage as Clare saying that Simon was saying that Clary was a good girl, and thus deserves all the worship and praise she gets. There is a passage later on in the book that really makes it obvious that this was what was saying. When Isabelle later makes a dick joke, people didn’t hesitate to look down her for it. Basically, what Clare is saying is ‘surely good girls don’t know dirty jokes or innuendo’. Once again, this type of sexist theme is straight out Stephanie Meyer’s playbook.
This is sexism and misogyny plain and simple. This continues to proves my earlier claim that this book series is no better than Twilight. Actually, in a lot of ways, this book series is even worse than ‘Twilight.’ and Clary is basically Bella Swan in a red wig.
