This chapter is really showcasing the length of Valentine’s idiocy. He has demons, powerful demons that he can control with The Mortal Sword. However, Valentine has no backup plan if the Mortal Sword is taken from him and his own demonic forces are turned against him. It’s a complete and utter strategic fail. Cassandra Clare can mention all the chess games Valentine and Jace had when Jace was a child, but this really shows that Valentine doesn’t have a grasp of basic strategy or hell even basic common sense.
This also proves that Valentine having control over demons makes no sense. I will never understand how Valentine is able to make demons work for when Shadowhunters are derived from Angels; by rights their mortal enemy. With the sword and conversion spell, it sort of makes sense. Unfortunately, he just gained The Mortal Sword in this book and Valentine has been using demons for years previously to ‘City Of Bones’. In my opinion, this just another plot hole and a massive one at that.
I also like to point out that Cassandra Clare in her own canon, just told us that the plot of ‘City Of Bones’. meant absolutely nothing to the overall story arc of these books. Valentine just told us that he would have to wait years until his child soldiers to grow up before he could actually use them. I actually pointed this out way back in ‘City Of Bones’ when this malarkey was originally brought up. So now I have to ask: WHY DID HE GO AFTER THE MORTAL CUP IN THE FIRST DAMN PLACE??!!!
Logically, Valentine should have gone after The Sword from the get go. Do I need to tell you guys how disrespectful this is to her readers? She is basically saying that whole last book was a complete waste of our time. And it pisses me the fuck off like you wouldn’t believe!
I really think that Cassandra Clare should have just was combine this book and ‘City of Bones’ into one book. And before you book fans start, don’t you try to tell me that it was because there was too much going on in the previous book. As I said in my overall review of ‘City of Bones’, that was basically half useless exposition and half filler. So there really is not excuse.
