Cassandra Clare is having a very good year. In January the television series Shadowhunters, based on her young adult series, The Mortal Instrument, premiered (and was just renewed for a second season on Freeform.) This week Clare’s latest book, Lady Midnight is her first no. 1 debut on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books List. Lady Midnight focuses on 17-year-old Shadowhunter Emma Carstairs, who is on a quest to find out who or what killed her parents five years earlier and avenge them. Emma first appeared in City of Heavenly Fire, the last installment in The Mortal Instrument series. While Clare’s book comes only months after Shadowhunters debuted, the author does not credit the show with this particular book’s success.
More likely, success is due to word of mouth and a loyal fanbase. “I think it is organic,” says Clare “and that is what I am happy about. The books started ten years ago [with City of Bones] and built in sales over the years. That was happening before the TV show.” Lady in Midnight is the first in a new series in Clare’s Shadowhunters universe, joining The Mortal Instrument series, the The Infernal Devices series and two short story collections.
Ye gods! You can practically feel Cassandra Clare’s smugness oozing all over the article. This woman never changes. Also, don’t quote me on this, but I heard that her book sales have been in decline for a while. I actually put this success at the feet of the tv show ‘Shadowhunters’. I think Clare was smart enough to figure out that ‘Shadowhunters’ would be a hit and released it the book to take advantage of that.
Also, Clare has been writing this exclusively for this series for ten years. Can’t she write anything else? On amazon, there is nothing but glowing reviews with the very rare few 1,2, or 3 star reviews being overwhelmed by the fans of the book who give her nothing but 5 or 4 stars. However, on tumblr I’m seeing reviews from people who tell that this is the same regurgitated storyline recycled into a new book.
*sigh and pinches her nose* I’m going to just have to add this new book to very long list of the books in her series that I have to read. Someone send help!
