The people who own the movie/TV rights (they are the same thing and the same people. The same people who made the movie City of Bones make Shadowhunters. They did not separately buy TV rights, there was no point at which I sold TV rights — once they made the movie they had the rights to make any kind of visual adaptation they want, forever, until the end of time) also own Infernal Devices and could do what they want with it.They do not own the Bane Chronicles, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, Dark Artifices, or Last Hours, and cannot legally use scenes or plotlines from those books or characters who originate in those books. I think one of the writers said otherwise at Wondercon but that was just a mistake — no harm meant — they can read the extra material for background if they want, just not use it.(It works the other way around too, in that we wouldn’t be allowed to, say, do a TV cover for the Bane Chronicles.)Complicated, but there you go.*they did mention Magnus’ past and Imasu in the twelfth episode, but that was a mistake, we discussed it later, that’s all. Of course they can mention anything about Magnus from Infernal Devices.
Thanks to my good friend E for the tip! So believe me when I say that when I saw this post, I was practically frothing with rage. First of all, the timing of this news is fucking suspect at as hell. You know, Shadowhunters is about to have their season finale, and it feels to me that Cassandra Clare has a case of the sour grapes, because the show wasn’t canceled at her demand. “You didn’t do what I say, and so you can’t have the rights to my whole series, so there!” Clare says that she discussed this with the showrunner Ed Decter and the writers beforehand. My question is why would Producers not only talk about something from the books they knew they weren’t licensed to use, not only at Wondercon, but in episode 1×12 as well, if it wasn’t already perfectly clear from the get go they could only do TMI and the Infernal Devices? Also ,I am the one who feels that if you read between the lines of her answer , that Clare is once again basically doubling down on the notion that she does not now or never not approve of the series.
Yeah, I can get after she sold her rights to TMI series for the movies, that she wouldn’t have any say over the books being adapted, but I once again it feel like Clare is backpedaling away from the show. Let me show you guys something:
Clare looks awful chummy with the cast, don’t you think? Really chummy for someone who claims that she didn’t really approve of the show and they created the show because she just sold them the rights to TMI and she had no active role in promoting it . Don’t you just love the photographic proof your lies, Clare? I do!
Oh, and another thing, do you see how she blatantly used the cast to promote her upcoming book?
You see that! That is the star of Shadowhunters of holding up her newest released book, ‘Lady Midnight’, and don’t you know it’ topped the best seller list.
Also, What happened to that Malec first time story that she was supposed to write for charity? But now that after Clare`s book went to the top of the best seller lists she backed out. She was using Shadowhunters fans from the get go. This is just another instance of her trying to backpeddle and punish the show for not following her books to the letter. Let, me tell you guys a little secret: One of the biggest reasons why the movie, “City of Bones” flopped so hard was because IT FOLLOWED THE BOOK CANON.
So you know what Cassie I hope you enjoy your stories, because I pretty much guarantee you that this show can do just fine without the rest of your series to fall back on. The writers are doing just fine without your input, and so just keep chewing on your sour grapes. I’ll be here cackling when this show eclipse your horrible written series.
