This is just the culmination and logical conclusion to all of Jace and Clary’s moronic decisions in this chapter. Seriously, Jace went to a vampire lair with only Clary (who is an untrained Shadowhunter by the way ) where they are vastly in number, they enemies enhance strength and speed, with zero back up, and no type of alternative exit strategy in case things went wrong.
Jace has a cell phone, he used it way back in Chapter 12 to call Alec. However, Jace in his infinite stupidity didn’t call Alec and Isabelle, not to mention any of his fellow Shadowhunters for help. Also, this is just occurring to me, but you mean to tell that the oh so powerful and wise Clave only had Alec, Jace, Isabelle, The Lightwood parents, and Hodge protecting New York City? New York City, which is according to the United States Census Bureau the city had a population of 8.31 million residents in 2007. This makes no sense at all and really shows how ineffective the Clave really are.
However, let’s back up and look at these two snippets shall we? Especially, the first passage. Clary’s big idea is to take Raphael hostage. Clary got this bright idea before it was even confirmed that Raphael was de facto leader of the coven. She had no idea if Vampires really gave a shit about each other at all. Raphael could have been just cannon fodder, and both Clary, Jace, and Simon would have all been dinner. And the Clave couldn’t have retaliated because Jace and Clary both broke the covenant by entering the coven’s lair.
Lucky for all them, a page later their bacons were saved by the timely rescue of a pack of werewolves. In the end, it just really irritates me that no one in this goddamn books has a lick of common sense.
