I think this passage is one of the most infamous ones of the entire book so far. I actually saw excerpts of this passage a long time before I decided to spork these books, and I have to say after seeing what the television show did with this scene. I much prefer what the tv show did with this scene, Why? When the tv show did this scene, it was had a totally different tone. You can obviously see that Isabelle was just light teasing between friends. However, here it’s catty and spiteful.
Isabelle and Clary are relating to each other as rivals, but it’s more than obvious that Clary really doesn’t want Simon. Oh, Clary can say that she does, but it’s been obvious from the get to go that Clary was never really truly interested in taking her relationship with Simon to the next level. Clary has been all about Jace from the moment she met him way back in Chapter 1. So why does Clary have to constantly compare and compete against Isabelle? Why can’t they be real friends?
I actually had a lot of male friends at her age, but even I managed to have at least one or two female friends. I know I never judged Women in the way Clary does, and I was and still am a bit of a misanthrope. Yet, I have never judged Women in this way. It’s sad that Clary hates her own gender so much.
This scene is entirely filled with slut-shaming on Clary’s part, it’s once again pushing that damaging theme that girls should only see other girls as romantic rivals and nothing else. This type of mentality is what causes childhood bullying, and it’s disgusting.
