I think Cassandra Clare was trying to convey that Clary feels guilty over Alec’s injury and that she was really concerned about Alec’s welfare. Unfortunately for us, Cassandra Clare is an utter hack, and thus managed to convey the complete freaking opposite. Clare has managed to show us that her wonderful special snowflake of a heroine is completely incapable of showing the slightest amount of empathy and basic human decency. She is telling us that Clary gives a shit about Alec, but once again Cassandra Clare refuses to show it. These snippets all but showed us that Clary Fray doesn’t give a rat’s ass about anyone but herself (and maybe Jace on a good day).
And Clary with her fake selflessness and her overdramatic pity party seems to forget that it was Alec’s choice to follow Jace. It’s was Alec’s choice to stand there like an idiot and not run away. It was Alec’s choice to foolishly charge Abaddon, knowing full well that Abaddon is a Greater Demon, and thus way more powerful than a junior Shadowhunter. The fault for Alec’s injuries lay entirely on Alec and Abaddon.
I would like also point out that Alec may not have deserved to get injured, but he diffidently deserved to be called out on his bullshit back in Chapter 16. No, Clary using his sexuality as a weapon wasn’t and still isn’t right, but it was Alec who started that confrontation. He was the one who decided out of nowhere, to blame Clary for all of Jace’s stupid actions. He was the one who shoved Clary up against the wall one threatened to kill her just because she confronted him about his sexuality. In my opinion, the only thing Clary should feel guilty about is that she used Alec’s sexuality as a weapon against him.
Again, Clary is supposed to be our plucky courageous and stubborn heroine. She’s supposed to be a strong badass character. Yet, every time a man treats Clary like shit, she is all too quick to apologize or feel guilty for showing a backbone. From Luke to Jace, to Alec, and Simon, she always ends up apologizing even when she was in the right. Oh, and before someone points out that Clary does get angry and calls them out on their shit, I would like to point out by apologizing Clary is basically saying that these guys were right to treat her that way in the first place.
